New Releases :
The
Census Commissioner, India on 30th January 2002 released data
on classification of population by workers
and non-workers based on provisional results of Census of
India 2001. The data also gives distribution of workers by four-fold
industrial category, viz., cultivators, agricultural labourers,
household industries and other workers for each state and
union
territory. The data pertains to each state and union territory
and by rural and urban areas of residence. With this the
first phase of basic data release based on the provisional results
of Census of India 2001 is complete.
While
releasing data on Rural Urban Distribution of Population as per
the provisional results of the Census of India 2001, list of
384 Urban Agglomerations, 5,161 Towns including Statutory Towns
and Census Towns in India were made available. Now the Census
has released the complete list of constituents of each Urban
Agglomeration (i.e., Towns, Municipality, Notified Area Committee
(NAC), Town Committee (TC), Outgrowth (OG), etc). This would
help the data users to study the population characteristics of
the constituents of each Urban Agglomeration separately.
As
per the Census of India 2001 there are 6,38,365 villages in India
including the uninhabited villages. Census has released data
on number of villages in each state/union territory in India
at the time of 2001 Census. The Statement also gives the number
of villages at the time of 1991 Census as well for comparison.
The actual list of villages will be made available at the Census
of India website shortly.

Evaluation of Census / Statistical Websites :
A 'Technological overview of statistical web sites
in Asia and the Pacific' found the Census of India website at http://www.censusindia.gov.in/ to
be third fastest in average response time among the 33 national
statistical websites hosted by the ESCAP regional and associate
members. In May-June 2001, an experimental test was conducted
to compare how fast individual web sites responded to a series
of ping requests. Web site hosted by National Statistical Office,
Thailand (http://www.nso.go.th)
was found to be the fastest followed by Bureau of Statistics,
Fiji (http://www.statsfiji.gov.fj).
