Feature: Child sex ratio in the age group 0-6 years
The provisional results of Census of India 2001 released by the Census Commissioner, India showed a substantial decline in the sex ratio in the age group 0-6 years (child sex ratio). The 'Paper 1 of 2001, India' based on the provisional results of the 2001 Census highlighted this issue by devoting a full section on this subject. This distressing state of affairs raised voice of grave concerns across all sections of society. It set into motion serious debates and resulted in a series of action on several fronts to curb the menace of female feotecide in certain parts of the country. This article focuses on this issue and provides some interesting insights.
Distribution of population by religion - 1991 Census

India is a diverse country with many religions. As per the 1991 Census the Hindus constituted the majority of the population comprising about 82.00% of the total population of India. Next were the Muslims who constituted about 12.12% followed by Christians (2.34%), Sikhs (1.94%), Buddhists (0.76%) and Jains (0.40%). There were large number of persons who reported following various other religious persuasions (like, tribal religions etc. ). Know more about this interesting dataset published by the Census.
