Definitions:
Rural & Urban areas
The Indian Census since the very beginning, besides giving the basic count of population of various towns and cities in the country, produces and presents data on various demographic, social and economic characteristics separately for rural and urban areas. The conceptual unit for urban areas is a ‘town’, whereas for the rural areas it is a ‘village.’ This issue of eCENSUSIndia provides detailed metadata on Rural/ Urban areas, Urban agglomerations, Out growths etc.
Feature

Degree of urbanization in India as per the provisional results of the 2001 Census is lower than the world average. In India only 27.8% percent of the total population were found in urban areas, whereas for more developed region of the world this figure stans at 76.0%. This issue of eCENSUSIndia contains a detailed analysis of the rural-urban distribution of population in India. A map showing the percentage of urban population to total population by districts is also included.
