| CENSUS OF INDIA,
1931 |
|
TABLE
I
|
| Area, houses and Population.
|
|
1. The figures in this table relate to
the Indian Empire except certain tracts beyond the
administrative frontier in Assam
and Burma. They do not relate to those parts of the
peninsula which are outside the Indian Empire .
2.
The Settlement of Aden Including Perim Island is included,
but not the Aden Protectorate .
3. Details of
some of the principal States included in the Agencies and
Provincial States groups will be found on page 4 where
also is shown the population of the areas under British
Administration in certain Indian States .
4. The figures in this table are based on a detailed
enumeration on the standard schedule except in the
following cases:-

In
the case of the Baluchistan Tribal Areas a simplified form
of schedule was employed. In the other areas in the
population was estimated after a careful inquiry. For the
manner in which the estimates were made, reference should
be made to the corresponding reports.
5.
The 33 units which appear in the 1921 table have now
become 35 in consequence of the following changes:-
1. The Western India States Agency has been
separated from Bombay.
2. The Punjab States Agency has been separated from
the Punjab.
The Madras States Agency has similarly
been separated from Madras, But this has not involved any
change in this table, as it appeared separately in 1921.
The census of the Madras Province, except in the case of
Travancore and Cochin, which as before have acted
independently, their reports being included in the India
series.
6. In the Province of Assam the Khasi
States, Previously included for census purposes in British
Assam, have now been shown separately under the head ‘
Assam States’ which formerly had reference to Manipur
State only . Separate figures for these States do not
appear in Table XX, but with the exception of these and
other very small States figures will be found in that
table not only for the States which are not shown
separately in the general tables.
7. The topographical surveys carried out during the
decade in various parts of India have resulted in a
revision of area figures which accounts for some
discrepancies between areas given here and in 1921 and for
an increase of 1045 sq. miles in the computation of the
area censused in that year. Other changes are accounted
for by inter-provincial transfers. The remaining areas are
at present under revision but the figures are not yet
available. An area of 908 square miles incorporated into
British India from the previously un-administered tracts
on the Assam frontier, and an area estimated at 1,400 sq.
miles similarly incorporated into the Chin Hills District
in Burma have been included for the first time while 5
square miles formerly in the United Provinces have been
ceded to Nepal, making a total addition of 2,302 square
miles to the area of India on its external boundaries.
Para 2 of the fly leaf to table II gives the corresponding
population figures of these areas.
