| CENSUS OF INDIA, 1911 |
|
VOLLUME I
|
|
PART II
TABLE
|
|
1.
The figures in this Table relate to the whole of the Indian
empire except East Manglum and an unadministered tract in
North Arakan, both in Burma, with an aggregate area of
about 5,000 square miles, and certain tracts beyond the
administrative frontier in Assam and Burma, which are
inhabited by Abors, Mishmis, Singphos, Was and other wild
tribes.
2. The difference between the total population here
shown and that recorded in the pamphlet issued in October
1911, is due to the inclusion of the figures for Kharan in
Beluchistan, the enumeration of which was delayed for
about six months owing to political reason.
3. Although situated in Arabia, Aden is
administered as a part of the Bombay Presidency. It is
therefore included in this Table. Not so the Kuria Muria
Islands, Sokotra or the Protected States adjoining Aden on
the main land. Nothing is known regarding the population
Kuria Muria Islands except that it is very small. The
population of Sokotra is roughly estimated at 5,000, and
that of the Protected Tribes on the mainland at 607,200.
The details are as follows:- Abdali 25,000; Subehi 27,000;
Fadthli 35,000;Amiri (Ahl-Radfanshaari, Jabal Jihaf Extra)
50,000; Akrabi 1,000; Aulaki (Sultan and Sheikh) 60,000;
Lower Aulaki 20,000; Behan Al Kasab 11,000; Upper Yafai
100,000; Lower Yafai 60,000; Alwai 1,500; Kaiti (All
Hadthramaut), Kathiri, etc., 200,000; Wahidi of Bir Alli
3,000; Irka 200; Haura 300; Haushabi 8,200.
4. The Table does not include the population of
French and Portugese India. The census of French territory
was effected on the 10th March 1911, at the
same time as that of British India, when it was found to
have 282,386 inhabitants (males 138,563, females 143,823,
of whom 40,177 were British subjects. Potugese India,
comprising the districts of Goa, Daman and Diu, was
enumerated on 31st December 1910, when the
census of Portugal was taken. The population of Daman and
Diu is noted in the margin. The final figures for Goa had
not been ascertained when this table was sent to press but
according to rough addition worked out immediately after
the census, the population was 541,074. On this basis the
total population of the Portugese territory would be
602,564.
5. Nor does the Table deal with the external States
of Nepal, Afghanistan and Bhutan. The population of Nepal
according to a census taken by the Durbar in March 1911 is
5,639,092 (2,854,727 males and 2,784,365 females). There
has never been an enumeration of the other two States. The
population of Afghanistan has been estimated roughly at
4,600,000 and that of Bhutan at 3,000,000 to 4,000,000.
6. Details of some of the principal States includes
in the Agencies and Provincial groups will be found on
page 4, where also is shown the population of the areas
under British administration in certain Native States.
7. The figures in this Table are based on a
detailed enumeration on the Standard Schedule except in
the following cases:-

the tracts marked with an asterisk a simplified form of
schedule was employed. Elsewhere the population was
estimated. The manner in which the estimates were made is
described in the Introduction to the Report Volume.
8. The difference between some of the areas here
shown and those in the corresponding Table of 1901 is due
partly to the inclusion of the area of the Sundarbans and
of several newly enumerated tracts, partly to
inter-provincial transfers, and partly to corrections made
on the basis of recent surveys. There was an error of
5,000 square miles in the area of the border State of
Manipur as reported at the last census.
9. The figures for Madras States in this and
subsequent Tables, as a rule, include those for Cochin and
Travancore. The census of these States was carried out
independently, and their statistics do not appear in the
Report for the Madras Presidency.
10. In Table XIX at the end of the volume, the more
important figures are given for the districts in each
province and for Native States not shown separately in the
general Tables. For further details regarding these units
the local census reports should be referred to.
Note:-
The district of Anjengo which forms an enclave of the
Travancore State has been omitted from this statement as
it is administered as part of the Madras Presidency and
its statistics are included in the Census Tables of that
Province.
