Census is not only a head count. Every ten years since 1872, the Census in India has been publishing statistics on various characteristics of the population, such as, demography, social and cultural aspects, economic activities, housing, amenities and assets, migration, fertility, etc. Analysis of the data has always presented a unique opportunity to understand the dynamics and trends pertaining to different characteristics of this huge and diverse population of the country.

This section presents an ensemble of articles on different aspects of Census, some quite known and some others not quite so known. The purpose is to create a hub of reference material for use in analysing the datasets that are to be released on Census 2011.
