Number of census houses used as Shop/Office in the country has risen to 1.77 crore (or 17.7 million) from 1.34 crore (or 13.4 million) in 2001 – a growth of more than 30%. The highest growth is in Dadra & Nagar Haveli UT (+119%) and the lowest is in Kerala (+7.4%).                The gap between number of households and the housing stock (i.e. number of census houses used for residential and partly residential purposes) in the country has reduced from 48 lakh (or 4.8 million) in Census 2001 to about 20.5 lakh (or 2 million) in Census 2011. In rural areas of the country the gap is 16.7 lakh (or 1.7 million) and in urban areas 3.8 lakh (or 0.38 million).                Of the 30.6 crore (306.2 million) occupied census houses in India, 23.6 crore (or 236.1 million) are used for residential purpose and 0.9 crore (or 8.6 million) for residential and other purposes. The total housing stock (i.e. number of census houses used for residential and partly residential purposes) is thus 24.5 crore (or 244.7 million) constituting about 79.9% of the total census houses. Of the total housing stock, 16.6 crore (or 166.1 million) are in rural areas and 7.9 crore (78.5 million) in urban areas.                As per Census 2011 results released recently, there are 33.1 crore (or 330.8 million) census houses in the country. Out of these 30.6 crore (or 306.2 million) are occupied. There has been an addition of 8.2 crore (or 81.7 million) crore census houses in the country since the last census in 2001.                Provisional Population of Cities/UAs having Population more than 1 lakh and above is released ***                 The Provisional Population of India as per Census 2011 is 1.21 billion (or 121 crore)               India is the second largest country in the world in terms of population after China (1.34 billion)               The three most populous countries in the world, China (1.34 billion), India (1.21 billion) and USA (308.7 million) together constitutes more than 40% of the total population of the world.

Use of different materials in the construction of roof at the country level is undergoing change. In rural India proportions of households using different materials are: Grass/ Thatch/ Bamboo/ Wood/ Mud, etc.: 20% (declined from 27.7% in Census 2001); Plastic/Polythene: 0.6% (increased from 0.4%); Tiles: 28.7% (declined from 37.5%); Burnt brick: 7.2% (increased from 5.6%); Stone/Slate: 8.9% (increased from 7.3%); G.I./ Metal/ Asbestos sheets: 15.9% (increased from 9.8%); Concrete: 18.3% (increased from 11%) and Any other material: 0.4% (declined from 0.6%).

    

Still 3.3 crore households in rural India live in houses with Grass/ Thatch/ Bamboo/ Wood/ Mud, etc. as roof. The number has reduced substantially since 2001 by about 49 lakh. The largest decline is reported from Uttar Pradesh (57 lakh).
