Use of different materials in the construction of roof
at the country level is undergoing change. In rural India proportions of households
using different materials are: Grass/ Thatch/ Bamboo/ Wood/ Mud, etc.: 20% (declined
from 27.7% in Census 2001); Plastic/Polythene: 0.6% (increased from 0.4%); Tiles:
28.7% (declined from 37.5%); Burnt brick: 7.2% (increased from 5.6%); Stone/Slate:
8.9% (increased from 7.3%); G.I./ Metal/ Asbestos sheets: 15.9% (increased from
9.8%); Concrete: 18.3% (increased from 11%) and Any other material: 0.4% (declined
from 0.6%).
Still 3.3 crore households in rural India live in houses
with Grass/ Thatch/ Bamboo/ Wood/ Mud, etc. as roof. The number has reduced substantially
since 2001 by about 49 lakh. The largest decline is reported from Uttar Pradesh
(57 lakh).
